Skirt Styling

8 Apr

When I go to vintage stores or markets I’m always on the lookout for good skirts, I adore how vintage skirts always seem to be just the right length with teeny figure loving waists and yards of beautiful fabric.

Maybe you’re not usually one for skirts or perhaps you’ve never tried your hand at rummaging for a vintage wonder but I can’t recommend it enough. I practically live in vintage skirts with basic, Italian style leather sandals all summer. The look doesn’t have to be totally vintage either, we’re not going for a cliché fifties vibe and certainly don’t want to look like an extra on the set of Grease. Oh no no no. The key with vintage is to work it into your own unique style palette, don’t lose yourself in a Dita Von Teese-Doris Day mine field.

Here are three vintage skirts I’ve picked up over the last few months in preparation for when the tights come off and the legs are set free.

A plain grey tee tied up at the waist gives a laid back feel to this candy stripe skirt, teamed with a couple of luxe accessories. Hello BBQ and cocktails. (Tshirt: Primark, Bag: Dorothy Perkins).

A long vintage skirt with deep patch pockets is perfect for hopping on your bike and cycling to the nearest park for a picnic with a baguette, cheese and wine in your basket. (Bag: gift, tshirt: Tea and Cake @ Topshop)

I love the soft fabric and tortoiseshell buttons on this skirt and think it looks great teamed with Breton striped jumper for a bit of a French vibe. (Jumper: Topshop).

Here’s the candy striped skirt again but this time dressed up for the evening with lots of gold jewellery and a deep teal complimentary coloured plunging top. (Top: Topshop).

A little collared blouse elevates a vintage skirt for the office and I love the pastel colour combination of the pink and blue. Keep it up-to-date with a tan belt and statement necklace. (Necklace: Topshop, Blouse: Primark).

Lastly I’ve teamed the full pink skirt with a relaxed off the shoulder black tee for a little nod to the sexy details a lá Brigitte Bardot.

OOTD, Saturday Shopping

18 Nov

I went shopping this Saturday which is becoming a regular occurrence now that the autumn/winter season is fully underway. It’s my favourite fashionable time of year and I love living somewhere that has changing seasons and a fall in temperatures, perfect for knitwear!

I wore this chunky sailor striped jumper from Topshop, dark grey Joni jeans (also Topshop) and heeled ankle boots with metal and embroidery detailing from H&M.

Bey and Topshop are in business

28 Oct

Great article on the Beyoncé/Topshop partnership, hope there’s some yoga wear planned. Sure this will be a fierce contender for other less-fashion led sports brands, can’t wait!

hot-bey-topshop-1Yes, you heard right: the immortal being that is Beyoncé will be teaming up with Topshop to launch an athletic street-wear brand. This is no plain collaboration, though, because besides involving the majesty that is Beyoncé, actually sees Topshop owner Sir Philip Green and Bey creating a 50/50 joint venture company, Parkwood TopShop Athletic Ltd, to produce apparel and accessories across dance, fitness and sports categories. That means it’s pretty much a standalone brand that promises “a dynamic fusion of fashion with the highest levels of technical performance”, whilst arriving from the hands of Beyoncé herself. NOW WHO RUN DIS MOTHER.

This, of course, is but logical for a woman who already runs the pop world with cool, confidence and no shortage of style. And after all…

Sir Philip Green calls her “one of the most hard-working and talented people in the world, who spends many hours of her life…

Treasures New & Old

27 Oct

A Saturday spent in the countryside in a small town called Ironbridge meant a trip to a second hand book shop. I adore whiling away the time searching for old treasures and this time came home with a couple of great ones.

I can’t wait to start reading Daphne Du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek and Hotel Berlin by Vicki Baum.

After returning to Liverpool I had a short look around the shops on Sunday and picked up this lovely, oversized, envelope clutch from Primark for just £3!

With the opening of the newly improved Zara Liverpool I was able to buy a replacement handbag perfume after using one bottle up entirely, this is Zara Rose and costs £7.99 for 50ml. Using this as one of my daily scents means I can save my special fragrances for memorable occasions.

The pencil was a gift from my lovely best friend and has the Sex and the City quote ‘this love stuff is a motherfucker’. My best friend knows that I have the ability to pluck a Sex and the City quote from my mind to fit almost any situation and this is certainly one I see myself using a lot!

Finally I’ve included a bottle of Topshop nail varnish in ‘Middle Child’, my sister gave me this in my birthday. I am the middle of three girls so it’s perfect and I just love the amazing colour!

The Martini Lounge Burlesque

21 Oct

There was sparkle, humour, bedazzled breasts and the most beautiful costumes at the Martini Lounge burlesque show on Saturday night. A last minute occasion worthy of my favourite Topshop marabou feather heels!

The beautiful old Epstein theatre in Liverpool.

What I Wore… Topshop feather sandals, Dorothy Perkins wrist strap purse, Primark White skirt & H&M basic tee worn off the shoulder. Watch is Larsson & Jennings and tassel necklace from Primark.

Seventies Spring

2 Jan

Christmas was wonderful as ever but as the over-indulgence starts getting everyone down and the only talk in the office circulates around points, sins, macrobiotic this and fat-free that I always get an over-whelming urge to skip a couple months to rejuvenating spring time.

Now is the time to look ahead and whilst we may still be wearing our winter coats there is nothing wrong with a little Sun kissed escapism of the mind.

Seventies styling seems to have been flitting about the imaginations of designers as they created their spring/summer and resort 2013 collections. This stunning double-breasted, flared, brilliant white trouser suit at Celine has me dreaming of strolling along the banks of the French Riviera.

These diaphanous wide legged trousers at Chloe teamed with the crochet knit delicate sweater seem so modern day Little House on the Prairie, I am in love with this laid-back, glamorous hippy-vibe.

Gucci had their very own blend of glamorously grown up seventies flair with low cut, floor length dresses and the most beautifully cut camel trousers.

I can barely wait till spring to start wearing this look so I’ll be sporting a colour palette of nudes and minks whilst lounging in plush cocktail bars waiting for the rain to subside. Here are some high-street items to get groovy in.

Blouse, River Island

Trousers, Mango

Jumper, Topshop

Sandals, Topshop

Bring on the sunshine, New buds and baby chicks… I am so over winter

The Season of the Coat

3 Sep

I like summer when it’s really warm and walking around with bare arms and legs leaves everybody feeling just that little bit more relaxed, you know you’re only on your lunch hour but a patch of grass and a lolly-ice seems completely rational.

As much as I love summer, here in Great Britain the summer isn’t really that great and most days the patch of grass is wet and a bowl of soup seems like a better idea than frozen treats. I think that is why I have an undying affection for the first chill of autumn and the wonderfully bitter few months when I get to wear my favorite wardrobe item…the coat.

A good coat has the ability to make an outfit, it is not a tool only for warmth but just another way to conquer whatever look it is you want to achieve. There are expensive investment coats that are so classic and stylish they will last your whole life then there are fast-fashion high-street coats that are inexpensive and always bang on trend so this coming autumn/winter there really is no need to be left out in the cold.

Here is my lust have list.

Lisa Wool + Cashmere-Blend Felt Coat (Joseph) £545

Valence Coat Navy (Hobbs) £329

Mohair Boyfriend Coat (Topshop) £89

Velvet Fur Coat (Pins & Needles for Urban Outfitters) £125

Hooded Wool-Felt Jacket (Marni) £720

Coat with Appliques on the Sleeve (Zara) £129

Fantasy Fabric Coat (Zara) £99.99

Wrap up in something gorgeous this winter!

Louise Gray for Topshop

28 Aug

Okay so Louise Grays collection for Topshop kind of looks like a cross between a five year-olds craft box and a Drag artistes dressing room…who’s saying that’s a bad thing?! I say it’s high time we all had a bit more sparkle in our fashionable lives and If you want to try a little (perhaps a shimmering eyeshadow) or a lot (full on head-to-toe sequins) then this collection has something for you!

Here are my favorite items, dying to get my hands on that beautiful make-up brush set with the ever so chic mint green handles.
