Hello

25 Oct

So it’s back to blogging because far too many wonderful things happen in life to not be documenting it in online diary form.

I’ve just turned thirty, it happened with no impending dread or concern for rapidly deteriorating skin. Instead, it happened in Paris. My favourite place in the world, a city full to the brim with culture, beauty, amazing food and of course… the Eiffel Tower, who couldn’t be charmed by all of that.

In the course of turning the big 3-0 I acquired some wonderful gifts from friends and family that I am excited to tell you about.

In my absence from the blogosphere I’ve visited a couple of other great destinations in Europe and have first hand recommendations for anyone thinking of making some European trips in the future.

I’ve also been learning to ski (something I’ve always wanted to do) for an upcoming trip in January so expect to hear a lot more about that venture and my progress in the slopes. Bring on the red wine and fondue Switzerland.

Here’s a photograph of beautiful Montmartre, I hope it cheers this dark Tuesday morning.

You Smell Divine

9 Jul

Le Parfum dans tous les sans is a very beautiful exhibition based on the wonderful subject of perfume with photographs from The Fragrance Foundation of France and set in the stunning gardens of the Palais Royal. I had the great pleasure of enjoying the display of 50 captivating photographs on a sunny afternoon in Paris when the smell of roses wafted in the air and a rare feeling of utter calm passed over me.

There are two journeys through the photographs, one shows how perfumes are created and produced from the very first idea to the bottles lining department store shelves, the second journey is purely about the senses we use to experience scents. When I think about it, nothing brings a moment from the past back to me like a scent does, my nanna’s makeup box we would play with as children, the smell of engine oil in my grandads shed, cologne of ex boyfriends. There really is nothing like scent to provoke memories we thought we had long forgotten. Jean Paul Guerlain once said that perfume is the most intense form of memory, he was right.

This exhibition and its setting is wonderful, if you’re visiting Paris please don’t miss this one (it’s free too!).

Jean Paul Gaultier at the Grand Palais

7 Jul

The Grand Palais, Paris. What a setting for such an amazing exhibition of Jean Paul Gaultier’s work from the very beginning to the present day. Beautiful gowns, bondage-esque outfits in red lit rooms, so many wonderful photographs… this exhibition really was a treat for a fashion addict. To get up-close to Gaultier’s iconic conical basques, tartan clad punk rocker outfits and those stunning sailor stripes was a highlight of my recent solo trip to Paris. Here are some of my favourite pics from my visit, hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

92° Coffee

7 Apr

There’s a new coffee house on the block in Liverpool, except it doesn’t feel new at all. 92° felt like home as I sank into a big burgundy coloured armchair and tucked into a piece of delicious cake surrounded by bookshelves.

The decor is all fresh white walls and natural wood with a brilliant mural of a world map by local company Draw & Code behind the counter.

There are vintage vases stuffed with beautiful flowers next to industrial light fittings and huge windows, it feels like a country cottage that packed its bags and moved to New York City.

92° Coffee roast on site and have many varieties available for the most discerning of coffee aficionados. I opted for an afternoon pot of mint tea but the smell of fresh coffee was so inviting that I’ll be heading back soon for a cup of Joe. This place could be a new favourite.

I’ve Got a Thing About Knits

16 Dec

I think I’m addicted to knitwear, especially turtle neck jumpers. They are taking over my wardrobe one purchase at a time.

Fell in love with this thigh split chunky number from fast, inexpensive, fashion experts Primark for £12.

The Premium Collection by Miss Selfridge

26 Oct

Miss Selfridge is not a shop I choose to visit very often, in Liverpool it has been somewhat unceremoniously dumped into half the basement space of the extensive Topshop store and the result is very uninspiring. I am, however, signed up to their email newsletter and was intrigued to hear about their new Premium Collection… ‘an edit of exquisite dresses guaranteed to make you (and everyone you see), say W.O.W’.

The dresses range from a manageable £79 to a purse quivering £250 which is quite expensive for a high street dress, but this collection has been designed for special nights and the cost seems to reflect the beautiful beading and craftsmanship involved in the production of these garments.

There are a few lovely pieces of jewellery and some great faux furs to add a really luxe feel to outfits so I would say it’s definitely worth taking a look at this range ahead of the party season.

Here are my favourite pieces from The Premium Collection;

Right now Miss Selfridge have a competition running to win one of the premium dresses along with handbag, shoes and jewellery ready for the party season. You just have to provide them with your details to enter using the link on their homepage on http://www.MissSelfridge.com.
