Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner

31 Oct

When my Elle subscription hits the doormat I’m always eager to devour the latest issue and this month there was an extra treat, a travel size Benefit gel liner.

I love trying new beauty products and had heard good things about this product, it took two years to develop and according to Elle, it became the UK’s best selling eyeliner within two weeks. All just advertising hype or do we have a revolutionary product here?

I thought this gel liner was a bit tricky to apply and didn’t really feel in control of the shape of the flick like I do with a liquid liner. This liner also set really quickly which I think would be a really great feature after a bit of practise with the application.

The colour was really dark which I loved but it did smudge a little throughout the day which was disappointing. I tried out a graphic flick and was very pleased with the look, the gel formula didn’t crack at all and because of the dark pigment this look was very striking.

I’d like to try this liner again and get to grips with the application, I think it could be really great for creating powerful makeup looks.

Pucker Up

30 Oct

This week was a bit rocky to begin with and I really felt I needed a little pick me up so off I went to Boots with a new lipstick in mind. I used the points I had collected (love how it feels like it’s free!) and treated myself to Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in 08 Grand Cru for £8.99.

This really is a lovely deep, rich colour and actually does look like velvet on my lips with hardly any shine at all. It’s really easy to apply with great coverage and my hair doesn’t stick to it in the wind, which is one of my worst peeves. A cat-eye flick of black eyeliner makes this lip look fierce.

I took a little trip to Forever 21 to check out their sale and although none of the clothes caught my eye I did manage to get a couple of jewellery bargains for 99p each.

The black crucifix bracelet is going to add a little gothic vibe to my look and I just love the gold ampersand ring. The watch is Larsson & Jennings ( and the gold band bracelet was a gift from my bestie.
A good little shopping trip!

Handbag Reworked

29 Oct

I was recently on the lookout for a small, black, high street shoulder bag and found this one in Forever 21 for £18.50.

I liked the neat shape and the crossover strap detailing on the front but would have preferred it to have some hard wear too, I like metal details on bags for added luxe. Forever 21 had a jewellery sale on at the time so I bought this necklace for 99p and got to work!

I love sewing clothing garments but never really mess with my accessories too much so this was a bit of fun and as the items were inexpensive I didn’t worry too much about ruining them. I sewed the necklace along the top of the bag and really liked the finished look, a bit more interesting than the plain matte black and a truly unique item now.

My Minimal Daily Makeup

28 Oct

I’ve made a vow to stop wearing foundation on working days, I don’t like the idea of my pores being clogged up for all those hours. I’m going for a much fresher look and Think it suits the colder weather for my skin to look a little fairer with healthy glow in my cheeks.

I use Mac Pro Longwear Paint Pot on my eyelids and to cover any dark circles beneath my eyes, the colour I use is Soft Ochre and it’s the perfect match for my skin. It gives me a radiant eye look, even on Monday mornings and is a great fixing base under eyeshadows.

To give my brows a bit of shaping and fulness I use a Sleek Brow Kit in Dark that has a pigmented wax and a setting powder. This kit has a really great tone and helps frame my face really well, it also comes with a slanted brush, blending brush and mini tweezers for any stray hairs.

I love this Diorshow mascara by Dior and picked it up at the duty free before a flight to Amsterdam, it’s big soft brush makes application really easy and it makes my eyelashes look full of volume.

Sometimes I wear a flick of black liquid liner on my lids and while I adore that look it’s sometimes a little harsh. When I want a softer eye look I tend to go for shadows and bought this little Champagne Fizz trio from Collection because I love the dusky olive green shade. I apply it to the creases and lash line for a subtle hint of colour.

I always curl my eyelashes to open up my eyes and although I’ve tried more expensive curlers I find these cheap ones to give me the best curl, they can be found in Superdrug, Boots and chemists.

My makeup is not complete without a little dusting of blusher, this shade is called Pixie Pink by Sleek and a little goes a really long way! The shade is very pretty and used sparingly, gives a nice subtle flushed look.

Intense Care Baby Lips by Maybelline is my lip saviour, especially when the weather turns bitterly cold. It’s formula is soothing and not sticky at all, this one has a neutral scent so would be great for the boys too.

Finally, I finish off my pared back look with a couple of coats of Not Just A Pretty Face by Essie, the most perfect pinky nude that never makes me look like I have mannequin hands!

Bey and Topshop are in business

28 Oct

Great article on the Beyoncé/Topshop partnership, hope there’s some yoga wear planned. Sure this will be a fierce contender for other less-fashion led sports brands, can’t wait!

hot-bey-topshop-1Yes, you heard right: the immortal being that is Beyoncé will be teaming up with Topshop to launch an athletic street-wear brand. This is no plain collaboration, though, because besides involving the majesty that is Beyoncé, actually sees Topshop owner Sir Philip Green and Bey creating a 50/50 joint venture company, Parkwood TopShop Athletic Ltd, to produce apparel and accessories across dance, fitness and sports categories. That means it’s pretty much a standalone brand that promises “a dynamic fusion of fashion with the highest levels of technical performance”, whilst arriving from the hands of Beyoncé herself. NOW WHO RUN DIS MOTHER.

This, of course, is but logical for a woman who already runs the pop world with cool, confidence and no shortage of style. And after all…

Sir Philip Green calls her “one of the most hard-working and talented people in the world, who spends many hours of her life…

Outfit to Cheer Up a Moody Monday

27 Oct

It was my first day back in work after an entire week off today so I thought I’d put on something a little fun and colourful to brighten my mood.

The full skirt and schoolgirl shoes were both Primark steals and the beautiful fine knit jumper is from my high street favourite Zara. I accessorised with a Larsson & Jennings black suede leather watch and minimal makeup.

Treasures New & Old

27 Oct

A Saturday spent in the countryside in a small town called Ironbridge meant a trip to a second hand book shop. I adore whiling away the time searching for old treasures and this time came home with a couple of great ones.

I can’t wait to start reading Daphne Du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek and Hotel Berlin by Vicki Baum.

After returning to Liverpool I had a short look around the shops on Sunday and picked up this lovely, oversized, envelope clutch from Primark for just £3!

With the opening of the newly improved Zara Liverpool I was able to buy a replacement handbag perfume after using one bottle up entirely, this is Zara Rose and costs £7.99 for 50ml. Using this as one of my daily scents means I can save my special fragrances for memorable occasions.

The pencil was a gift from my lovely best friend and has the Sex and the City quote ‘this love stuff is a motherfucker’. My best friend knows that I have the ability to pluck a Sex and the City quote from my mind to fit almost any situation and this is certainly one I see myself using a lot!

Finally I’ve included a bottle of Topshop nail varnish in ‘Middle Child’, my sister gave me this in my birthday. I am the middle of three girls so it’s perfect and I just love the amazing colour!

The Premium Collection by Miss Selfridge

26 Oct

Miss Selfridge is not a shop I choose to visit very often, in Liverpool it has been somewhat unceremoniously dumped into half the basement space of the extensive Topshop store and the result is very uninspiring. I am, however, signed up to their email newsletter and was intrigued to hear about their new Premium Collection… ‘an edit of exquisite dresses guaranteed to make you (and everyone you see), say W.O.W’.

The dresses range from a manageable £79 to a purse quivering £250 which is quite expensive for a high street dress, but this collection has been designed for special nights and the cost seems to reflect the beautiful beading and craftsmanship involved in the production of these garments.

There are a few lovely pieces of jewellery and some great faux furs to add a really luxe feel to outfits so I would say it’s definitely worth taking a look at this range ahead of the party season.

Here are my favourite pieces from The Premium Collection;

Colour Blocked

23 Oct

It is October. I adore autumn with its orange glow of falling leaves. Streetlights reflected yellow in the drops of rain forming puddles on the pavements. Cheeks rose pink in the colder air. The delicious chocolate coloured liquid of a warming coffee.

Floral prints seem garish and bright colours almost clash with the seasons natural hue. What on earth is a fashionista to do?

Think French.

I love experimenting and having fun with colours, sometimes I have my very own colour-blocking weeks in the office. No prints or patterns just bold against bright and I love it but, it doesn’t feel right for now.

I want to sit at the back of the bus in moody black and have all the other commuters avoid me. I want to sip my red wine in grey cashmere and talk about current affairs with a lover. I don’t want to hide behind a wall of somber tones, rather I want people to think me mysterious. I hear them whispering ‘Is she a poet?’ ‘No, perhaps an artist?’ ‘No no my friend, I think she may be French!’.

Alexander Wang performs for H&M

23 Oct

H&M do designer collaborations well, the first by Karl Lagerfeld back in 2004 set the bar high with sleek black tailored pieces and egotistical white tees adorned with the face of Mr. Lagerfeld himself. Amaze.

Another highlight for me was the Maison Martin Margiela collection in 2012 which featured oversized casuals (my fave) and a fabulous pair of mirror ball leggings, who wouldn’t want them?!

Due for release into H&M stores on 6th November 2014 Alexander Wang’s hotly anticipated performance/fashion collection is set to be a hit in and out of the gym. Relaxed shapes and a neutral colour palette make the pieces accessible to a wide audience and with a broad range of price tags there will be something for almost everyone.

Speaking about the collection Mr Wang said ‘it doesn’t matter If you’re a luxury customer or an H&M customer- if you need gym clothes, if you work out, if you’re active, there’s a piece for everyone’ and isn’t that just what designer/high street collaborations should be all about?

Here are my key pieces…

This neon trim top would look fierce for a workout but could look great as part of a sports-luxe outfit layered over a figure fitting black sheath dress, an easy wardrobe addition at £27.99.

I’m in love with these leather trousers, the shape is perfect but I must admit, with their £179.99 price tag I’m probably going to have to live without them (sobs).

These Freja boots from Wangs own label 2010 spring/summer collection have had a rework in scuba fabric and are definitely not a pair of shoes to pop on for spinning class! I’m imagining these with a full ladylike skirt and loose knit jumper for a bit of a tough edge. Boots £149.99.

If you want everyone to know you’re wearing Wang then I’d make this my purchase of the collection, in soft grey marl with a slightly cropped shape I am a little in love with this and think it would look just perfect with a slouchy pair of vintage 501’s.

The last item on my Wang wish list is this gorgeous yoga mat. I am after all a self confessed yogi and at £34.99 how could I resist. Namaste.
